Online fraud increased 30% overall in Q3 2019 and bot-driven account registration fraud jumped 70% as cybercriminals tested stolen credentials ahead of the peak holiday shopping season, according to Arkose Labs' Q4 Fraud and Abuse Report. The analysis of more than 1.3 billion transactions found 1 in 5 account openings were fraudulent, with digital account registration becoming a primary identity-testing mechanism for fraudsters. Arkose Labs warned that account creation attacks — even failed ones — yield valuable intelligence for criminals preparing to strike during high-traffic retail periods.
