Arkose Labs CEO Kevin Gosschalk told Dark Reading that cheap labor, frequent data breaches and increasingly effective bot-detection tools are pushing criminals away from fully automated attacks and toward human-powered sweatshop operations. With the dark web flooded by affordable stolen credentials, Gosschalk explained that the economics of fake account creation have shifted — making it more cost-effective for fraudsters to use humans than bots for certain high-value schemes. The shift makes account fraud significantly harder to detect, as human-driven attacks more closely mimic legitimate user behavior.
