Cybersecurity has moved from a back-office concern to a core competitive differentiator in the gaming industry, as Akamai data shows Web application attacks on gaming companies rose 167% in the past year and the sector now accounts for 37% of all DDoS attacks globally — double the volume targeting financial services. Gaming executives interviewed for the piece say players who experience fraud or cheating will quickly abandon a title for a competitor, making trust and security as important as gameplay quality. The $235.7 billion gaming industry must factor fraud prevention into its growth strategy as attack surfaces expand alongside revenue.
