The Points Guy spoke with Arkose Labs CFO Frank Teruel about "gift card draining," a fraud technique in which scammers physically tamper with store-rack cards, copy the numbers and immediately drain the balance once an unsuspecting customer loads funds. Teruel explained that the delay between purchase and use — often weeks — gives fraudsters ample time to act before victims realize the card is worthless.
