Online fraud jumped 85% year-over-year in 2021, with metaverse-related companies facing 60% more attacks than average, according to Arkose Labs' annual report. Arkose Labs CEO Kevin Gosschalk said digital transformation, remote work and the metaverse are rapidly expanding online attack surfaces, warning that 21% of all online traffic was fraud- or cyberattack-related and 1 in 4 new account registrations were fake. The report urges all digital platforms to overhaul their fraud and security defenses, noting that tactics effective in prior years are no longer viable.
