Tax season: Beware the rise in fraud and fraudsters

Vanita Pandey, Head of Strategy at Arkose Labs, warns that tax season is prime time for cybercriminals who exploit phishing emails, fake tax authority phone calls and account takeover attacks to reroute refunds and steal taxpayer credentials. Pandey notes that fraudsters are increasingly using synthetic identities — stitching together stolen and fabricated details — to create fraudulent new accounts and capture rebates including income tax credits, child tax credits and employment benefits. She advises consumers to scrutinize all unsolicited communications from purported tax authorities and use robust security hygiene to protect their online tax accounts.
