KTNV Las Vegas cited Arkose Labs COO Frank Teruel warning of an 800% increase in toll fraud scams, in which bots generate thousands of random phone numbers to blast fake toll-payment texts designed to capture financial information. Teruel noted the scam's effectiveness stems from exploiting everyday uncertainty: "People see the message and think, 'Yeah, I probably did forget to pay.'" — making even Nevada residents, who have no toll roads, susceptible.
