Arkose Labs CFO Frank Teruel, who has more than 20 years in cybersecurity, spoke with Scripps News about the growing sophistication of romance scams ahead of Valentine's Day, warning that AI has eliminated the telltale signs — bad grammar, odd context — that consumers once relied on to spot fraud. A record $1.3 billion was lost to romance scams in 2022, according to the Federal Trade Commission, and Teruel said the messages consumers now receive "appear to be incredibly authentic." He urged heightened vigilance as AI tools make scam communications increasingly indistinguishable from genuine outreach.
