Cyber-crime soars with concerning rise of ‘bot armies'

Science and Technology Correspondent Brent O’Halloran reveals the concerning rise of cyber-crime as weaponry like ‘bot armies’ becomes easier to acquire.

From stealing passwords to scalping concert tickets, there is a bot built for many crimes and they’re available for any internet user to access.

“You can see here that they’re just publicly talking about it like they’re not hiding – this is something anyone can go search,” Arkose Labs CEO Kevin Gosschalk revealed to Sky News Australia.

The Australian Signals Directorate reported a 23 per cent increase in cyber-crime in Australia during 2023, while the number of bot attacks worldwide more than doubled this year according to Arkose Labs.

“Do not reuse passwords, use strong authentication when you can – don’t respond on fake looking websites,” Mr Gosschalk advised.

“It really should be a good reminder, please make yourself more difficult to come after than everybody else and you’ll be okay.”
